Working from Home? Check Out These Online Security Tips

with No Comments

The new year has many of us still working from home. While it may be convenient, there are things you should keep in mind so that you’re safe while working online. Check out these tips for a more secure work-from-home environment.

Update, Update, Update

There are hackers and security threats everywhere. This is why you want to make sure all of your devices are updated to detect viruses and malware. This includes laptops, tablets, phones, and desktop computers. Don’t assume that your device will detect a threat if your software isn’t updated.

Invest in a VPN

Many people use a virtual private network since they started working from home last year. This allows you to keep your online activity and location secret from anyone who may be snooping. A VPN lets you disguise your internet connection to make it look like it’s coming from an entirely different area. Some businesses provide employees with a VPN when they’re working remotely. If your employer has not, you may want to look into it. This will give you peace of mind that your connection is safe.

Look for Phishing Emails

Hackers use phishing emails to make up communications from legitimate companies or brands. They do this to try to steal login details and personal information. It only takes not paying attention for a minute to get sucked into one of these scams.

When you’re working from home, be mindful of the communications that you’re receiving in your inbox. Don’t click on anything that seems suspicious. Many phishing emails can be spotted by a misspelling or strange email address. If you notice an error or don’t recognize the email address, it’s best not to open the email.

Change Passwords

If you haven’t changed your passwords in a while, it’s best to make a switch. This can prevent hackers from using your password if they happened to snag it previously. If you think you’re going to forget your passwords, you can use a password manager to keep track of them all. This keeps all of your passwords safely in one place and takes away the stress of remembering your passwords.

Invest in a Webcam Cover

If video conferences are part of your workday, you’ll want to buy a webcam cover. Hackers can get access to your webcam without your permission. If you have important documents lying around, they may be able to see this as well as information about your location.

You may also want to use the “blur background” feature if your computer has it. This prevents people in your conferences, as well as hackers, from seeing personal belongings and information in your video background.

Also, if your webcam is separate from your device, you should unplug it when you’re not using it. Doing all of these things can help to keep yourself safe while working from home.
