It’s always been important to keep your laptop not only clean on the inside but also the outside. These days, people seem to be paying more attention to disinfecting all of their belongings including their computers.
No matter if you’re the only one using it or if it’s a community laptop for the family or the office, you want to keep the screen and keyboard sanitary. While it’s important to keep your laptop clean, you want to do make sure you’re doing it safely.
Let’s take a look at how you can disinfect your laptop without ruining it.
Use the Right Products
Compressed air is a good choice to get your computer keyboard clean. While it won’t disinfect anything, it will help to clean spaces between the keys and other cracks and crevices. Many people use compressed air to get any gunk out before disinfecting.
While you may grab a Clorox or Lysol wipe to clean your kitchen counter, you shouldn’t do the same for your laptop screen or keyboard. Using either one of those can damage the display or finish on your laptop.
It’s best to use isopropyl alcohol to clean the keyboard. Although it may not smell as lemon-fresh as other products, it gets the job done. The best way to use it is to make a solution of half 70% alcohol and half water. If you can use distilled water it’s better because it will help to prevent stains. Use a microfiber cloth to clean.
When it comes to the screen, there are special wipes designed to clean LCD and laptop screens. Using these will minimize the risk of ruining your screen.
Laptop Disinfecting Do’s and Don’ts
Besides laying off the Clorox and Lysol wipes when it comes to disinfecting your computer, you’ll also want to do the following:
Don’t spray any cleaning solutions directly onto your laptop. If you start spraying solutions into the laptop you run the risk of having any excess liquid get into the hardware and wiring. This is a big no! Once it gets in there, you’re opening yourself up to many other problems.
Don’t clean with the laptop on. Be sure to power down your laptop and unplug the AC adapter. Anytime you’re mixing liquids with electronic devices, you want to avoid the risk of electrocution. Powering down your computer and keeping it unplugged is the best way to do this.
Do start your cleaning with the keyboard. Let’s face it. The keyboard is usually the dirtiest part of your computer. Start your cleaning here and move on from there.
Do use different cloths to disinfect different parts of your computer. The whole idea is to rid your computer of germs. If you’re using the same cloth to wipe down your keyboard, mouth, microphone, and any other accessories, you’re only increasing the risk of spreading germs. You’ll want to use separate cloths for each part of your computer. This way, you can increase the chance of your computer and all of its accessories being as clean as possible.
Do be gentle when cleaning. Don’t use excessive force when cleaning your keyboard or any other computer part. Be as gentle as possible so that you don’t break anything during the cleaning process.
