With over 2.6 billion users, Facebook gets a lot of traffic. With all of that traffic comes the issue of how to keep it secure. Although you may be friends with just a few people, many others may be trying to see your photos and get into your Facebook account. If you’re worried about hackers, there are ways to secure your account. Let’s take a look.
Use Two-Factor Authentication
While you always need a password to get into your account, you can also use two-factor authentication to protect yourself against hackers. When you do this, you will get login approval. Facebook automatically sends you a six-digit code.
If you want to get into your account, you need to use this code to get in. This is especially helpful if someone is trying to get access from an unrecognized device. Even if you try to get into your account and are using an unrecognized device, you’ll have to put in this code.
To enable this function, go into your security settings, click the check mark near the “require a login code to access my account from unknown browsers”. Once you do this, save changes and you’re all set.
Enable Login Alerts
You can enable login alerts so that if anyone tries to get into your account, you’ll know about it. You’ll get a notification and you can also see what devices are already logged into your account. When you see devices you don’t recognize, scroll down to “where you logged in” and click “end activity”. This will help keep hackers at bay.
If you start to notice a lot of suspicious activity when it comes to logins, change your password to something difficult that no one should be able to guess. This means no birthdays or any other combinations that give details about yourself.
Don’t Give Permission to all the Apps You Use
As you scroll through your Facebook feed, you probably see lots of quizzes to take and games to play. Many of these apps allow you to do this if you give them permission to see your friends’ list or other activity.
These third-party apps can become a playground for hackers. Many of them don’t have security measures in place to prevent against hacks. Even if you think you’ve locked down your Facebook app, you may have given permission to other apps and not even realize it or have forgotten about them.
To check, simply go into settings and select apps. Remove any third-party apps you don’t recognize or that look suspicious. Going forward, don’t give access to any other apps when you don’t know much about them. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
